Sedation dentistry in Walnut Creek, CA

Dental phobia is common amongst both children and adults. Perhaps it was a bad experience at another practice or just the idea of someone in your “personal space.” Whatever the cause, dental phobia is real and can keep patients from getting necessary dental care. Dr. Mark Wong of Walnut Creek, CA is pleased to provide sedation dentistry, allowing patients to get the care they need without feeling nervous or anxious about their visit to the dental chair.

What types of sedation are available?

Dr. Mark Wong finds that many patients qualify for sedation depending on the severity of their anxiety. This can be discussed during the initial evaluation appointment. The two types of sedation available for patients with dental phobia include oral sedation and laughing gas.

  • Laughing gas. Laughing gas, which is a nitrous oxide gas, is used to help calm patients when they arrive. It is an odorless and colorless gas which is administered through the nose and can provide almost immediate relaxation for patients. The amount given will vary depending on the patient’s anxiety levels, but they are monitored throughout the procedure for any concerns that could arise. Patients are given oxygen after their procedure to reverse the effects of the laughing gas.
  • Oral sedation. Another option for those with more severe anxieties is oral sedation. This sedation relaxes a patient before they even arrive. Patients will need to arrange transportation, as the oral medication is taken prior to their appointment time. Patients are conscious and relaxed throughout the treatment. They return home to rest, and often awaken with little memory of their dental appointment. This type of sedation is best for those with more severe anxieties that often keep them from even attending their appointments.
