Root canal therapy is a specialized dental procedure to save teeth that are infected or can become infected. It is recommended for teeth where there is severe tooth pain, a deep crack or break, or a deep cavity that is very close to or is into the nerve space. If left untreated, severe pain, swelling, and or an abscess can follow.
Specialized tools are used to clean out the decayed nerve tissue and infection. After it is clean, a resin or rubber filling material is used to fill in the voids to prevent future infection. After a root canal, a crown or other protective restoration is needed to guard against tooth fracture or breakage.
