Fillings are used to replace missing tooth structure due to decay or trauma. They are an excellent restorative choice if the amount of tooth structure needing replacement is minor to moderate. Traditional “silver” fillings are a mixture of mercury, silver, tin and copper. Because of their dark appearance they were mainly used on back teeth.
Newer tooth colored or resin fillings are a mixture of ceramic and plastic compounds. They have gained wide spread use because of their ability to bond to the remaining tooth and come in shades that blend well with natural tooth structure.
